Hauserman Company was a leading producer of of movable interior walls for offices, factories, and schools, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. The company was founded by Earl F. Hauserman (1885-1943) who bought out part of the building supplies dealer for whom he worked and organized the E.F. Hauserman Co. in 1913. The company became a leading manufacturer of interior steel partitions and was a major defense contractor during World War II. Following the war, E.F. Hauserman's sons, Fred M. Hauserman (1909-1972) and William F. Hauserman (1920-2012) led the company, including expansion into Canada and Europe. In the mid 1970s, E.F. Hauserman Company consolidated with its principle subsidiaries to become Hauserman, Inc., In 1978 the company acquired Sunar, a Canadian office furniture manufacturer and in 1983 became Sunar-Hauserman, Inc. The company closed in 1989 due to changing economic conditions. Born in Pennsylvania to Michael A. and Martha A. (Dodson) Dively, he attended Lock Haven State College, earned a B.S. in electrical engineering at the University of Pittsburgh in 1925, and a M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1929. During the Great Depression, he worked at North American Refractories and at Republic Steel Corporation. He joined the Harris-Seybold-Potter Company of Cleveland, Ohio, in 1937, becoming director in 1941, vice president and general manager in 1944, and president in 1947. The company became the Harris-Intertype Corporation in 1957, and later the Harris Corporation. He served as president and chairman of the board from 1954-1961, continuing as board chairman from 1961 until his retirement in 1972. In 1971, his book, The Power of Professional Management, was published. He was a co-founder of the Cleveland One Percent Plan, whose mission was to encourage corporate support for higher education. Dively endowed a professorship in electrical engineering at Case Western Reserve University, where he served as vice chairman of the University Board of Trustees. In 1956 he endowed the Geo. S. Dively Foundation to assist various charitable and educational interests. He married Harriet Seeds in 1933. In 1969, he married Juliette Gaudin. During the American Civil War he was an officer in Companies D and I of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. His brother, Stanley B. Lockwood (1840-1884), served in Company G. of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Regiment and in Company K of the 105th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The collection consists of genealogies, biographical sketches, correspondence, diaries, journals, account books, appointment books, ledgers, stock certificates, minutes, leases, articles of incorporation, wills, deeds, corporate inventories, maps, newspaper and magazine clippings, tax assessments and returns, diplomas, certificates, military orders, and discharge papers. Material is included on several banking institutions, including Garfield Savings Bank, The Western Reserve Trust Company, Metropolitan National Savings Bank, and the East End Savings and Trust Company. Material on Ford family involvement in the construction and management of the Williamson Building is included, as is family involvement in other real estate enterprises, including The New Amsterdam Company, One Euclid Company, and the Ford McCaslin Company. Involvement in various legal firms by H. Clark, Horatio, and David K. Ford is well documented, as is David K. Ford's role in the organization and operation of the Lubrizol Corporation and Lubrizol Foundation. Family involvement with the Euclid Avenue Congregational Church, and with other philanthropic and social service organizations, such as the American Red Cross, the Maternal Health Association, University Hospitals, and the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University, is documented. His son, Samuel W. Smart, ran the store, 1854-1904, but also owned an insurance agency and the Bank of Willoughby. Samuel W. Smart's son, James H. Smart, continued the insurance business, dealt in real estate and served as mayor of Willoughby, 1926-1934. Samuel W. Smart's son-in-law, Sidney V. Wilson, took over the general store in 1904 and made it one of the largest country stores in the eastern United States. The collection consists account books, ledgers, cash books, savings deposit ledgers, real estate records, receipt books, tax books, voucher and remittance ledgers, dealers' cash books, insurance policy ledgers, and correspondence relating to the operation of the Smarts' general store, insurance business and bank. The collection provides insights into business management of the 19th century, including labor practices of the times. They came from Warren, Ohio, to Cleveland in the 1850s to engage in banking, railroad building, real estate and various businesses. Together they organized and operated the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad. Joseph was president of the Bank of Commerce (1852-1872), a leading benefactor of Cleveland charities, the first president of Cleveland City Hospital, and a trustee for Western Reserve College (1846-1885). Jacob, also a businessman and president of the Cleveland & Mahoning Railroad, was a prominent Ohio politician as well, serving as a member of the Ohio Constitutional Convention in 1850. His son, Jacob Bishop Perkins, was a large real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Joseph Perkins' papers include business correspondence, building construction contracts, land, tenement, and office leases, financial statements and business records, maps and surveys, cancelled land contracts and cancelled checks. Jacob Perkins' papers include voluminous correspondence, and accounts and receipts of business affairs. Jacob Bishop Perkins' papers include correspondence, legal papers, contracts, deeds, leases, maps, and surveys, all pertaining primarily to his affairs as a real estate owner and builder in Cleveland. Other family papers include school books, letter books, estate papers, genealogical information, a scrapbook on the early settlement of the Western Reserve, business papers of Joseph's son Douglas and a Civil War diary by another son Charles. | | | | Creator: | Wade, Jeptha Homer Family | | | | Dates: | 1771-1957 | | | | Abstract: | The Wade family was a prominent nineteenth and early twentieth century Cleveland, Ohio, family with business interests in the telegraph and railroad industries, mining, manufacturing, and banking. Jeptha Homer Wade spent his early life as an apprentice to a tanner and as a carpenter. He next turned his interest to the emerging telegraph industry. In 1849, he organized the Cleveland and Cincinnati Telegraph Company. In 1857, Wade moved to Cleveland as the Western Union Telegraph Company's first general agent. His business interests were extensive in Cleveland, including the Cleveland Rolling Mill Company and the Citizens Savings and Loan Association. Randall Palmer Wade worked with his father in the telegraph business, moving with him to Cleveland in 1857. His business interests included the Cuyahoga Mining Company; the Citizens Savings and Loan Association; the Cleveland Banking Company; the American Sheet and Boiler Plate Company, and the Chicago and Atchison Bridge Company. Jeptha Homer Wade II also worked in the telegraph industry; he later joined the banking community in Cleveland. He was an active philanthropist, serving as a trustee of the Western Reserve Historical Society, Western Reserve University, Adelbert College, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. He was an incorporator of the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1913, and later established a purchasing fund for the Museum. The collection consists of correspondence, wills, diaries, autobiographical sketches, memoranda, deeds, contracts, drawings, financial records, passport documents, land grants, notes, receipts, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks, relating to Jeptha Homer Wade and his role in the telegraph industry in the Midwest, and to his son, Randall Palmer Wade, and grandson, Jeptha Homer Wade, Jr. Includes letters from or about Ezra Cornell, Amos Kendall, Samuel F.B. Morse, and James A. Garfield. Personal correspondence related to members of the Wade family, including Ellen Howe Garretson Wade and Ellen Howe Garretson, is included, as is travel journals written by various family members. The Wade family interest in spiritualism, particularly that of Jeptha Homer Wade after the death of his son Randall in 1876, is well documented in his personal correspondence. | | | | Creator: | Grasselli Family | | | | Dates: | 1778-1967 | | | | Abstract: | Eugene R. Grasselli (1810-1882) came to the United States from Strasbourg, France in 1836. He established a chemical plant in Cleveland, Ohio in 1866 and pioneered the refining of sulfuric acid. The plant was incorporated as the Grasselli Chemical Corporation in 1885 with Eugene's son Caesar A. as its first president and other family members as directors. Caesar's son, Thomas S., followed him as president. The company grew to include 28 plants before it was sold to du Pont in 1928. The collection consists of personal and business papers of Eugene R., Caesar A., and Thomas S.
